A stunning physical interactive
installation running for 5 weeks at the LEVEL Centre. It has been created to
provide a stimulating visual environment for all of the events within the
Participate + Create programme and visitors to the Centre. The NET forms a
large sculptural object in the centre of the space and uses different lighting
states to emphasise certain contours of the structure. These change over time
and create the impression of several different sculptural formations from a
single structure.
It is suspended using wire rope and elastic so that it can be manipulated to form new shapes, contours and even new structures. Sound plays an important role within the space and together with the lighting, has been carefully designed to heighten sensory experience.
In terms of meaning (and here we could
have a long discussion about the meaning of art) – we have deliberately not set
out to communicate a specific idea. Instead we incorporated many very
individual views and actively encourage all to spend some time thinking and
reflecting within the space. For some they feel trapped – as if the net has
been designed to capture and contain. Others see (amongst many things)
landscapes, contours of the body or maps of potential connections.
The NET will remain installed for five
weeks. This means that our participants will experience the same environment
over this period. It is a new way of working for us at LEVEL and we hope this
will provide the time for people to engage at deeper levels and explore new
ways to interact within the space. To
full understand the impact of the NET and how it may inform future work we have
developed a research programme involving all sessions being documented using a
time-lapse camera.
