New Images from Fractured Ground at LEVEL
Fractured Ground/Fracture is a multi media performance project which forms a part of the CONTAINER R&D Project at the Level Centre.
The project started with a performance and audio visual installation created by LEVEL Director Andrew Williams and physical performer Karla Jones held at the Level Centre in November 2016. It comprised improvised dance where the physical language is created, modified and influenced by somatic senses. This mirrors some of our work and approach when developing individual performance language with learning disabled performers.

Fractured Ground
An audio/visual installation and performance at the Level Centre, Derbyshire, UK created by Karla Jones (Physical Performance/Dance) and Andrew Williams (Sound + Video).
Fractured Ground is a part of a exciting new project for LEVEL - creating live performances and audio/visual installations. It attempts to throw into shadow our 'normal' rational/intellectual approach to creating, collating, structuring and valuing information and art, and instead shine an interrogatory light on what can be created when emphasis is placed upon our somatic senses.

The NET - a new Installation at LEVEL
A stunning physical interactive
installation running for 5 weeks at the LEVEL Centre. It has been created to
provide a stimulating visual environment for all of the events within the
Participate + Create programme and visitors to the Centre. The NET forms a
large sculptural object in the centre of the space and uses different lighting
states to emphasise certain contours of the structure. These change over time
and create the impression of several different sculptural formations from a
single structure.

Furniture Music Project
We have just started work on our latest project - Furniture Music (working title). This is being developed by Dr Toby Heys and will take the form of a sound installation at the
LEVEL Centre opening on the 29th of April 2017. Toby is the Digital Technologies Research Fellow at the Research Centre, MIRIAD, Manchester School of Art and is collaborating with LEVEL to create Furniture Music.
Furniture Music is based around
creating sound at the edge of, and just beyond, our (human) sensory
perception. To do this Toby has been working with some bespoke speakers
and has just taken delivery of a TRACTION Sub Bass - see images below.

Inter-ACT + Re-ACT
Co-commission with D-LAB
Will
Hurt - Artist in Residence
LEVEL is pleased to announce that digital
artist Will Hurt has been selected to undertake the first Inter-ACT + Re-ACT
Artist Residency at the Level Centre. This project is a partnership with D-LAB
and funded through the Arts Council, England.
Will’s
brief is to create new work that will engage people as they travel through the
LEVEL Centre. It provides the
opportunity to work with LEVEL artists and spend time researching and trialing
new methodology, tools and equipment to enable people with a learning
disability to interact with and react to art within a digital environment.

Body as Canvas
An exploration of identity.
A new photographic exhibition at New Art Exchange, Nottingham UK from June 20th.
Developed through a process
where people with a learning disability created several unstructured,
improvised performance events using movement, sound and light. Each performance
was based loosely upon the underlying themes of an exhibition at New Art Exchange
and captured using a digital camera – framing just a fraction of a second of
the event.
The camera became the audience for the performance and its presence influenced
how people reacted and wanted to be presented within its frame. Body as Canvas presents the individual
images as statements – a behaviour, a culture and a source of creativity where
difference shines - a cultural world yet to be acknowledged. The photography
uses soft focus and shallow depth of field to give emphasis to the individual
within each frame.

Shadows [Inter-ACT + Re-ACT]
The general theme of the LEVEL Participate & Create programme over the past seven days has been 'shadow'. As a part of Inter-ACT + Re-ACT we have been experimenting with back projection to create shadow maps. These allow people to manipulate the image by changing and controlling the light. Three images using shadow projection during the Performing Arts session are posted below.
